The Godfathers of Grunge.

As humans began to socialize, they found ways to express themselves, music is one of them. There are many music genres, but the ones with the biggest aproach to all kinds of people around the world have been pop and rock music. Eventually Rock music became famous for its rebel style, tough cords and explicit language. But there is history behind all the leather and big hair styles. This kind of music started as an expression of rebellion in the 70’s. At that time, young people where not satisfied with the “hippie” movement. Simultaneously with the Rock Music breakout came many mores. One of the most significant and outrageous of this genre has been the revolution known as Grunge. There are many grunge music bands, but the most important have been Sound garden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.

One of the most representative bands of grunge was Soundgarden, formed by Kim Thayil (guitar), Hiro Yamamoto (bass), and Bruce Pavitt. Yamamoto played in several cover bands before forming the band in 1984 with his roommate Chris Cornell (vocals), a Seattle native who had previously played drums in several bands. Thayil soon joined the duo and the group named itself Soundgarden after a local Seattle sculpture. Scott Sundquist originally was the band's drummer, but he was replaced by Matt Cameron in 1986 (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide. 2000). Grunge was an underground movement until Soundgarden finally signed up for “Sub Pop” the first grunge record label, which helped them become one of the most significant grunge bands in history.

Another important grunge band have been Nirvana, which started when Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar) met Chris Novoselic (born Krist Novoselic) (bass) in 1985 in Aberdeen, WA, a small logging town 100 miles away from Seattle. And after going throught a dozen of drummers, they finally stayed with David Grohl (Kim Summers, All Music Guide, 2000). This band made a considerable change in the genre, mainly due to the released of their second album, Nevermind (1991). After their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” video got to MTV, they just became the spokers of the 90’s generation. The song became an hymn for all teens and it just transformed Grunge music into a trend. Even though kurt Cobain (Nirvana’s leader singer) past away in 1994, they’re still one of the bands responsible for Grunge’s fame all over the world.

The other influential band is Pearl Jam. It was founded in 1990 by Jeff Ament (Bass Guitar), Stone Gossard (Rhythm Guitar), Mike McCready (Lead Guitar), Eddie Vedder (Lead Vocals) and Matt Cameron (Drums). Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle, Whashignton, where the movement began, in 1990. They have realeased at least 20 albums along the road. Which makes them, not only pioneers, but Godfathers of Grunge music. Pearl Jam is the only band that has lasted over the years. They are still representing Grunge on the present day, keeping the essence of this revolutionary genre alive.

To summarize, rock music has transisted over the years. But the most important genre has been Grunge, because it was the origin of a sub-culture in Seattle, a city that bands would never visit. Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam are indeed, responsible for the fame of Rock. They were the portal for not only new groups, but also genres that arised from the roots of Grunge.

Fast Food, Short Life.

Life is more hectic than ever, between school, sports, clubs and friends, who has time to think about what to eat? Time for another choice: fast food. This kind of food is popular and commercially successful in most modern societies, because of its variety of flavors. There are fast food restaurants on every corner, and also the prices are very cheap, which makes it available to everyone. However, “junk food”, another name for this type of food, is often criticized for having side effects which people would regret for the rest of their lives. Fast food can cause medical problems such as a fatty liver, heart attacks and strokes at early age.

By eating a lot of “junk food”, the fat is accumulated in the liver, producing another health damages as diabetes mellitus and high blood triglycerides (any of a group of lipids that are formed from glycerol and fatty acids and are widespread in animal tissue). Dr David Ludwig, who led the research, Fast-food Diabetes Link Warning (2002) said: "Fast-food habits have strong, positive, an independent associations with weight gain and liver problems in young black and white adults."
Another risk that is taken by ingesting fast food is strokes, also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Where the blood supply is interrupted by rupture or obstruction of a blood vessel of the brain. As a consequence a stroke involves the sudden loss of neuronal function and can cause neurological damage or even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. Strokes can affect patients in different ways such as physically, mentally, emotionally, or a combination of the tree. Some of the physical problems include paralysis, pneumonia, appetite loss, vision loss. Also stroke can result from direct damage to emotional centers in the brain or from frustration adapting to new limitations. 30 to 50 % of strokes survivors suffer depression which is characterized by irritability, sleep disturbances and lethargy. According to the book PEDIATRICS Vol. 113 No. 1 (2004), pp. 112-118, people who ate fast food, compared with those who did not, consumed more total energy (187 kcal; 95% confidence interval), more energy per gram of food (0.29 kcal/g; 95%), more total fat (9 g; 95%). These results prove that “junk food” is a fuel for all kinds of diseases.
As a result, fast food is rich in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol, which are the main factors that lead to suffer heart disease. Most heart attacks are caused by a blood clot (mass formed by a portion of liquid thickening and sticking together) that blocks one of the coronary arteries. In conclusion, fast food is harmful for people’s health because its effects can be lethal, such as, heart attacks, strokes even fatty liver. Therefore, knowing all the consequences that eating fast food caused in the body; people should be more sensible on their choices in order to have a healthier life.

My Greatest Dream

I'm a very down to earth person, I always try to stay as grownded as I can, but there's always room for a little fantasy... And there are many of them in my head, but the one I dream about the most is to have a great life. And a great life to me, means having my family around most of the time, without their support, I couldn't make my dreams come true. Apart from that, i will love to have a job that includes travelling around the world the whole time! I love meeting new people and different cultures. So basically, my greatest dream is to work in tourism and visit many different countries, having my family's support.

The Essay

There are several ways to speak our minds and express our selfs, through papers, speaches, and also through art in all of its forms. In the formal education the most apropiate way of speak someone's mind is what's known as essay. An Essay is a short work of writing where any theme it's explained in an organized way with three parts, an introdutcion, a body and a conclusion.
The root of the essay it's called the thesis statement, which will be the main idea the writer wants to develop in the paper. There are many tipes of essays; there's the Five Paragraph essay, which it's often used in schools as a pedagogical tool, the academic essay and the imitation essay.
The five paragraph essay is the one where the first paragraph contains the introduction, the body it's develop in the three middle paragraphs, an the conclusion is the last one. The Academic essay is more discursive and serious, it's used for some Universities as an a tool for aplication to them, it can have a word limit of between 2,000 to 4,000 words. And the Imitation essay is where the writer takes an author's paper, analyzes and gives his/her personal point of view of it.
The essay is the best way for a writer to learn how to organize his/her ideas, and also begin to develop their vocabulary in order to improve their writing skills.
